Wedding Cake – What’s Your Style?

Wedding cake – what’s not to like?! In May we looked at wedding traditions and whether to keep them or ditch them. I don’t see wedding cake being ditched any time soon somehow, although it might not be in the traditional style. Today we’re going to look at various different styles, with photos of gorgeous cakes from suppliers around the UK. *WARNING – contains gratuitous photos of deliciousness!*

Before we get onto the cake photos, let’s have a look at a few things to bear in mind when choosing your cake. Actually, I can’t resist! This is Edwina from Rosewood Cakes, taken at Skibo Castle with one of her stunning creations.

Flavours

From around the 17th Century wedding cake was just fruit cake (Wedding Cakes – Why We Have Them). These days however there are many more options with flavoured sponges being widely used. Have a think about what your guests might like. Now, Death By Chocolate might be your all time favourite, but it might not be everyone’s taste. Whilst you want everything to reflect yourselves as a couple you do need to consider your guests. The great thing about sponge cakes is that you can have a variety of flavours.

Tastings

You will probably be hitting the wedding fairs at some stage, or do some local research for your wedding cake. Whilst some may look spectacular, what do they taste like? You’re spending your hard earned money on your wedding and things have got to have more depth than just looking good. Some suppliers may charge for cake tastings. You can hardly blame them, especially if they get a number of people who aren’t particularly serious. However, this charge is usually deducted from the cost when you place an order with them.

When will your wedding cake be baked?

Whilst fruit cakes can be aged and taste better for it,  if you’re opting for sponges you want to know when they will be baked. Will they be fresh or made ahead of time and frozen? Do you mind if they’re frozen?

Transport and setting up at the venue

Does your chosen supplier transport and set your cake up at the venue? Make sure that you take delivery/mileage costs into account when budgeting for your wedding cake.

You will need to co-ordinate the wedding venue and wedding cake supplier beforehand. You don’t want your supplier waiting around for the venue to allow them in to set up. If you’re transporting and setting up your wedding cake yourself you may need to delegate this task to someone you trust. Personally I would pay any additional cost and have the supplier transport and set up – far less stress!

Portions per cake

This will depend on whether you opt for fruit or sponge. I’ve made up the graphics below as a guide – you can mix and match the sizes to get the number you need.

Cost

The cost of your cake will vary, naturally, depending on the style and size. Your chosen supplier will be able to guide you on how to get what you want within your budget. The more elaborate the higher the cost is likely to be to account for the work that will go into decorating it.

“My love of baking and decorating cakes started at an early age.  No cake was complete without buttercream piping, ‘hundreds and thousands’, and chocolate buttons!

In 2008, I bought a second-hand cake decorating book at the local Village Fete and challenged myself to make a ‘bouquet of roses’ cake for my mum’s 70th birthday.  Since then I’ve been hooked –  going on courses, baking and decorating cakes for friends and family and turning my hobby into a business in 2015 – ‘Leigh Smith Cakes’, based in Glenfarg, Perthshire.  I took early retirement from financial services the day I turned 55 and I haven’t looked back.  Baking even helped me at a time when I was still in  ‘corporate world’ when I was totally stressed out and had to take a few months off work – all I could do each day was go for walks, read and bake.  Marian Keyes wrote a book ‘Saved By Cake’ about how baking helped her at a  time in her life when depression took over.
